Fellow Magpies, attention, attention! How beautiful is this palette? Look at all that glitter! As soon as I’ve seen and swatched this palette in the store I knew I wanted it. After a bit of research, I’ve realized that the Pretty Rich collection was already out last autumn in the US, but it only just arrived in the UK.
The collection consists of an eyeshadow palette, three highlighters, a Better than sex mascara in a special diamond-studded tube, a brush and some lipglosses. Now the mascara I love and actually repurchased, but I don’t really care about the special case. Same with the brush and the lipglosses, but the highlighters… One of them I can’t stop thinking about. It’s called Canary diamond, it’s a beautiful warm tone, almost slightly orange shade and it’s unlike anything in my collection. I might pick it up later in the month, we’ll see.
Now let’s talk about something we are all here for, the eyeshadow palette. It’s an absolute stunner! I’ve played around a fair amount with it and it’s beautiful, but I am slightly torn.
Let’s start with the positives. I like the fact that it has three different finishes there. You get four mattes, eight shimmer shades, and four glitters. The mattes and the shimmers come in a uniform rectangle pan and the four glitters are housed in diamond-shaped pans. I think it’s a sweet touch. I feel like not all four mattes perform the same way. The three lighter shades are amazing, but the darkest warm brown (Oh, that’s rich!) takes a bit of time to build up. It’s a beautiful deep brown with some purple undertones, and this is the shade I was most excited about, of course, other than the glitters. It blends easily, which means you don’t have to be worried about being heavy-handed, but I feel like that is the reason why it takes some effort to build the intensity up.
The shimmery shades are beautiful (my favorite being Princess cut) but again, they take a bit of a while to build up. It’s easier to apply them with your finger, but if you want to be precise with a brush, it takes a while and they sometimes they apply a bit patchy. I would say if you want to use them with a brush spritz it first with a setting pray, it helps a lot with the application.
What about the glitters I hear you ask? Well… Again, they are a bit tough to apply if you want to use a brush. I haven’t tried to apply it on top of a glitter glue yet, as it states on the box that you don’t need one. They mention it as a pro tip, though. Again, you can help with a bit of a fixing spray first, and it does help a bit. I also find that it is hard to get full opacity with these glitters since it’s really hard to apply them. The wear time is pretty good, but if you have hooded eyes, the glitter will move around slightly after a couple of hours.
I would say it’s a nice palette, but I am a bit disappointed. It’s not the easiest one to work with, so if you are new to applying makeup I would say stay clear from this one. It definitely needs some experience when it comes to using it, which is a shame. They swatched amazingly, so I was expecting it to work nice, but this just proves it again, that just because something swatches well with your fingers, it doesn’t mean it will work well with the brushes.
I will also have to mention the packaging. I know they were going for that luxe experience, and it is beautiful. It is like a little jewel box, but it’s still too bulky for my liking. It’s not something you would want to travel with, it just takes up way too much space and it doesn’t have a decent sized mirror either. In exchange, it’s pretty …
This is the first ever look I’ve created with the palette. As you can see it is a bit messy. It’s not horrible, but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. (In my defence, that it was really hard to photograph, it looked a lot better in real life.) Keep an eye on this space, I’ll upload more looks soon.
What do you think of the Pretty Rich palette? Have you tried it?
Have a lovely day!
